Trade Talk: New Releases Suffer But Old Ones Enjoy Gains

With mixed response 'Stalin' entered third week and without any response 'Boss' stepped into the second week.

Comparatively, the collections of 'Stalin' have come down drastically from first week to second week. Although the Dasara festival brought big collections, over all result of 'Stalin' at box office is not satisfactory till now. But the first week record of 'Stalin' will be on its stand as that's not easily beatable.

On the other hand 'Boss' toppled at box office even on Dasara vacations. Trade reports say that this is the Nag's film that is running with incredible weak collections in the last 5 years.

'Bommarillu' and 'Andala Ramudu' are making good collections at box office and at a few places they attracted houseful collections during Dasara.

Small film 'Promise' can be declared a failure at box office as it's not attracting any audiences.

Film Talk: Sherawat plays ex-CIA agent's role in Dasavatharam

Mallika Sherawat plays a sexy ex-CIA agent in Kamal Hassan’s ‘Dasavatharam’, where the actor/director himself plays a record-breaking ten roles!

Mallika Sherawat was apparently so keen on working with South superstar Kamal Hassan that she agreed to take on a role in his next film ‘Dasavatharam’ even before she heard the script! Ravi Kumar, the director of ‘Dasavatharam’, reveals that Mallika will be playing an ex CIA agent. “She plays a bold, modern girl,” he adds.

He says that it was a pleasure working with her as she would report every morning at seven on the dot. “But one had to be professional since Kamal himself would reach the sets around 2.30 -3 am everyday! He would do his make-up for about five hours and by the time Mallika arrived he would be ready for the shot!”

With a budget of around Rs 30 crore, the film has imported a make-up team headed by Michael Westmore from LA. “Kamal has written the script, screenplay and dialogues of the film. We have Asin along with Mallika Sherawat playing the female leads. Kamal thought Mallika would be perfect for the role.”

Ravi confirms that there will be steamy scenes between Kamal Hassan and Mallika in the film. “If there is a Mallika, there have to be hot scenes,” he says with a laugh. ‘Dasavatharam’ will be a bilingual in Tamil and Hindi and is slated to release next August.

Impression: Can Flop NTR and Flop Vamsi Make 'Rakhi' Hit!

Krishna Vamshi and NTR have been facing the music of incessant flops from quite a long time. While NTR suffered three years of flops, Krishna Vamshi completed four years with failures.

The film 'Simhadri' that was made in the direction of SS Rajamouli has broken all the records and kept NTR on the top slot. Film pundits also said that Jr. NTR will be the future big star in Tollywood. But since then, the flops inundated NTR. 'Andhrawala' turned a miserable flop for the reason of playing father's role beside Sanghavi, 'Narasimhudu' turned flop due to meaningless story, 'Naa Alludu' toppled due to lack of proper narration and the recent 'Ashok' also failed due to weak story line. Only 'Samba' could run on below average track.

Coming to Krishna Vamshi, his film 'Khadgam' turned the heads of people with controversies. 'Sree Anjaneyam', failed due to weak projection of hero, 'Chakram' failed because of over dose of philosophy and 'Danger' flopped because of wrong casting.

Now combination of this flop director and flop actor is making the film 'Rakhi. The film runs with sister element and emotional scenes are many in this. NTR reacts for the injustice done to his sister and to avoid any similar injustice to his other sisters he fights with all sinister elements. It would be a sheer coincidence if the story brings the resemblances of 'Mrugam', 'Puttintiki Raa Chelli' and 'Hitler'.

We have to wait and see till December how far this film enthralls the audiences.

Screen Buzz: Esha Deol's gala time in South Africa!

Actress Esha Deol seems to be having a gala time in South Africa. When she's not busy shooting for Anubhav Sinha's "Cash" in Cape Town, she works out at the sprawling gym of the hotel.

In fact, Esha is quite glad that she has time to concentrate on her fitness and physique - because these mean a lot to her.

What's more, she has fallen in love with the serene beauty of Cape Town and feels she could just buy a house there.

Not a bad idea!

Box Office: 'Stalin' on top, but sliding back

Hyderabad, Oct 6 (IANS) After a record-breaking opening collection of Rs.130 million in the first five days, Chiranjeevi's "Stalin" is losing its magic at box office. However, it still stays at the top of the list this fortnight.

The top five Telugu films are:

1. "Stalin" - The film had a great opening despite the awkward fusion of a social message with commercial ingredients.

2. "Boss" - After devotional hit "Sri Ramadasu", Nagarjuna draws good openings for his latest feel-good entertainer. But director V.N. Adithya has failed to translate it into a super hit flick.

3. "Andala Ramudu" - Comedian Sunil with his pranks and dancing has launched himself as a saleable hero. Mega Supergood Films Pvt. Ltd makes a comeback with this village-centric story.

4. "Bommarillu" - A hectic publicity campaign keeps the film going well in cities, but it is tottering in B and C centres. Actors Siddharth and Genelia ignite screen with their magic presence and Prakash Raj proves his calibre once again.

5. "Pokiri" - The industry's biggest ever grosser is still going strong after 150 days.

Top Albums: Mani-Chiranjeevi magic works in 'Stalin' album

Hyderabad, Oct 6 (IANS) The magical combination of actor Chiranjeevi and composer Mani Sharma has worked again in the "Stalin" album, which tops the charts this fortnight.

The top five Telugu albums are:

1. "Stalin" - The album rules, but its popularity can be affected by a dip in the film's collections. "Parare parare" and "Thobare thoba" are very popular.

2. "Boss" - Music duo Kalyan Mallick and Harris Anand comes up with an impressive album. "Edo tamashaga" and "Naa kallu vale" are catchy.

3. "Bommarillu" - Devisri Prasad comes out of the blue to deliver a musical hit when everyone has almost written him off. "Kaani ippudu" and "Lallu Darvaja" are topping the countdown shows.

4. "Nuvvu Nenu Prema" - Unfortunately, even an album from ace composer A.R. Rahman could not create ripples among Telugu listeners. However, "Maaza maza" and "Bangaranni" are brilliant.

5. "Manasu Palike Mouna Ragam" - Composer Radhakrishnan of "Anand" and "Godavari" fame comes up with a peppy album. "Kotha pelli kuthuru" and "Ningi nella" are good.

People have wondered where the cute girl, Colors Swati, has gone after Krishna Vamshi’s ‘Danger’. She is busy again with Krishna Vamshi for the film ‘Rakhi’ as per unofficial sources. She is playing the sister to Jr NTR.

The title itself suggests that it has sister element in the film. The film has completed large part of its shooting and about 30% is still to go.

The film would certainly become a deciding factor for NTR as ‘Ashok’ played only a ‘just ok’ game at box office.

Inside reports say that the film is coming well.

Urmila: "I Find Only Homosexuals but Not Hot Men to Love"

"Men around me are either married or homosexuals. I find no right person to love and get along with him. That's the reason for my spinsterhood and nothing hot is happening in my life", says Urmila Matondkar raising curtain to a fresh controversy.

This 30 plus diva has come out with her feelings saying that she hasn't find Mr Right till now. She says that she never likes fearful men.

"Men in this city and country tend to get very intimidated by successful women and they certainly don't seem to be thinking right. A man who does not approach me because of my screen image or is intimidated by me is probably not being worth approached by. I also have a very no-nonsense and unapproachable demeanor which is why my friends call me the Great Wall of China, as far as accessibility goes, and that's not helping either," she reflects. Well, as she rightly said, "relationships need time and commitment," So, does she have the time?

Urmila says that she needs a man who can make her witty, jovial and amusing and at the same time as one who doesn't curb her freedom.

"I want to fall in love with a very, very normal guy, who is intelligent, smart, funny and passably good looking", says Urmila.

Well, if she says that many men around her are gays, who would be those?

Well, Charmy is awaiting the release of her upcoming film 'Mantra'.

Film Talk: Hot and Spicy Sonia's Bikini Scene

Well, the issue was settled as Selva convinced his parents saying that is pure professional aspect.

The film is now hitting Telugu screen with the title 'Dongalaku Donga'. Susi Ganesan directed the film in the production of Kalpathi Agoram. 'The Enemy Within' is the caption given to the film.

The film may send hot waves among youngsters.

Screen Buzz: Bollywood beckoning Miss India World?

Warsaw, Oct 2 (IANS) Modelling is high on her agenda and maybe Bollywood too, says Miss India World Natasha Suri, who has taken her loss at the Miss World 2006 contest in her stride.

Natasha says she has decided not to get disheartened at losing out in the semi-final round of the contest held here Saturday night.

"I reached the last 17 semi-finalists, that itself is a big achievement for me. It is no mean achievement to reach the semi-final round. Frankly speaking, my chances to wear the Miss World crown were hardly one percent as I was competing with 105 other aspirants. Only one has to be the winner," Natasha Suri told IANS.

The 22-year-old beauty from Mumbai spoke to IANS at length at the residence of the Indian ambassador on Sunday.

Speaking of her future plans, Natasha said she would do modelling and was not hostile to the idea of joining Bollywood. "Let us see how the future shapes up. I am a great believer in god's will. Whatever he wishes, I have to do, and this is my destiny," she added.

"The entry to the Miss World 2006 contest has opened new vistas for me in life. Now onwards I want to live a very purposeful life. Whatever I have achieved it is because of the tremendous love from my countrymen who prayed for me all these days. Now it is my turn to pay them back my debt which I acquired the day I was selected Miss India," she said.

She had words of praise for her team that had worked tirelessly with her all these months for the event, as well as for Indian filmmaker Karan Johar, who was on the panel of judges. Johar had remarked, "Natasha has a great sense of stage presence."

Members of the Indian diaspora felicitated her at the residence of the Indian ambassador. She brought along Miss Australia and Miss Malaysia with her as they had become good friends during their month-long stay in Poland.

"I am leaving a part of my heart in Poland and I will always cherish the affection of warm-hearted Poles who have given me tremendous affection. Whenever I get a chance I will visit this beautiful and friendly country again. If Poles love me because they love India then I am proud to be an Indian," she said.

Film Talk: Tollywood Hits Vs Bollywood Blockbusters

‘Bommarillu’ is still running with houseful collections despite the new releases like ‘Stalin’ and ‘Boss’. The film has standard audiences with stable inflow. At home and abroad the film is doing considerable grand business. The film completed 50 days successfully and the success meets were held at various theatres amidst the joyous uproar of audiences and film lovers. Genelia, Siddarth and Dil Raju have made rounds at various theaters.

‘Stalin’ and ‘Boss’ are still under litmus test to tag them with appropriate adjective.

Coming to the Bollywood scenario, the much expected KANK is still in the charts because of its Abroad Business. Other then abroad this has only average mileage at home with meager collections. The director of this film Karan Johar has not announced his next Venture. But According to Mumbai Buzz he is going to announce in December 2006. It’s obvious that Shahrukh is one of the heroes in his upcoming film.

‘Lage Raho Munnabhai’ is on the top slot at present making thumping collections. The film proved to be a successful venture with bagging mass appeal and securing critical acclaim at a time.

Press Release: Bommarillu Antipiracy Note

Although great efforts have been made to eradicate the AntiPiracy, we still see some of the sites and forums trying to post BOMMARILLU ( and other movies which are being screened now ) for downloads.

A serious action will be taken on all those sites. There have been a significant number of judicial sentences in recent times in India and as well as in US.

Its our sincere request and appeal to stop such things and help us kill piracy.

Tollywood next cut: target huge expat markets

Movies are the opium of the masses (apologies to Karl Marx). ‘Movies for every mood’ is the dictum for most Telugus. To satiate the huge entertainment appetite of the approximately eight crore Telugu speaking populace, Tollywood (guesstimated at Rs 1,000 crore) churns out an average 220 movies-a-year, more than Bollywood. This includes about 70 dubbed movies from Tamil, English, Malayalam and Hindi. Unlike their Kannada brethren, Telugus are not linguistically xenophobic when it comes to movies.

The state hosts the eponymous studio of Telugu movie mogul D Rama Naidu (who holds the Guinness record for producing the highest number of movies individually). In the nine-month period this fiscal, 80 movies have already hit the halls. However, Tollywood’s production costs are high, points out D Suresh Babu, a leading producer and distributor.

Policy has had its impact on Tollywood, which made a turnaround after hitting a rough patch. It was the Telugu Desam government under founder president NT Rama Rao, an icon of Telugu cinema, which dealt a blow with a slab system of taxes as high as 40% on movie theatres. This made screening an unprofitable business, forcing many halls to shut down or convert into commercial complexes or godowns. During N Chandrababu Naidu’s regime, the industry’s efforts for correction didn’t work. It was the not so movie-friendly YS Rajasekhara Reddy who replaced the slab system with a tax on tickets. This came as a relief for exhibitors and producers. “Shutting down of theatres has almost stopped,” says Vasiraju Prakasam, senior film journalist.

Piracy, a universal bane, has eroded nearly 50% of the industry’s business value. “But it’s not as bad as Bollywood. Pirated VCDs of Telugu movies are available at the end of the second week of a movie release,” says Suresh Babu. 2,500 piracy cases have been booked. “We asked the government to turn all video libraries into licensed ones so they rent only originals, and to set up a special court to try video piracy cases, which the industry would fund,” he adds. Vasiraju says that the AP Film Chamber of Commerce and the Telugu Film Producers Council has set up squads to check piracy, with the police actively cooperating and fans clubs of stars pitching in as well.

The glamour of movies still lures lucre. “Funding for big movies, with big names is no problem with many banks and financial institutions coming forward. But financiers and producers of dubious background spoil the show,” rues Suresh Babu.

It’s time now to target expats in the US, Gulf, Malaysia, Singapore and Sri Lanka. “We must benchmark ourselves with global standards. We can even dub Telugu movies into, say, German or French under the Bollywood banner. Also, we need more quality film institutes to train people,” avers he. Well that’s the next cut.

Trisha Talk: 'I am in love'

Actor Trisha tells us that she's found the love of her life. Any guesses? “No one would guess right. As I am not in love with any handsome hunk, but a metallic mean machine – My brand new car. I am so enthralled with my new vehicle, that I love it more than anything else in the world,” she explains.

City Buzz: Pokiri Dress Makes the Youth Pokiris!

The film 'Pokiri' has influenced the youngsters of this generation a lot. The Pokiri dress has become most fashiobable and guys are seen wearing the dress everywhere.

Than in Hyderabad, the trend is observed in big way at the places like Guntur, Vijayawada, Rajamundry, Eluru and Visakhapatnam. The dress looks typical in double layer.

It appears as if the guys the wearing a short-hands T-shirt on a full-hands one. But that's one piece that was popularized by Mahesh Babu through 'Pokiri'.

If anyone happens to go to those places, just have a look around and it's obvious that at least one or two guys would flash in the eyes with Poikri dress!

Expression: 'Boss' Scored Big Marks with Brahmanandam

The role of Brahmanandam in Boss is being relished by many of the audiences. The collective opinion of many of the audiences is that the scene must have elaborated even in post interval part. The aero plane scene between Nag and Brahmanadam has been brining many laughs in theaters.

At the same time many of the audiences are feeling that the film would have been better if the track was run only with Nayantara and Poonam Bajwa's characters, where Brahmanadam would play full length.

"The film would have been good in the absence of Shiyaji Shinde and Shriya", says a few.

Well, the film is getting trimmed with a scissoring of about 7 minutes in second half. Sources say that Shriya's role and fighting sequences are going to cut down a lot.

However, Brahmanandam's role, although very short scored full marks in this film.

Laila: "Marry Or Carry, I Prefer To Be A Hot Heroine"

Laila is better known to Telugu film lovers as 'Flying Sparrow', in native words 'Egire Pavuram'. She got married to Mumbai based business man Mehdi. Although she decided to quit films after marriage, her husband has no taboos over that. He has all his encouragement for her to continue her profession. Adding to this, the success of Malayalam film 'Mahasamudhram' made Laila change her mind.

The film is doing well at tehatres and hence Laila is now saying that she wants to continue as heroine as long as she looks good and healthy. She is not so conscious of her pregnancy that may hit her in near future.

With a smile of her face, Laila says, "Marry or carry, I wish to be a heroine all the while".

Well, that must be a right decision in fact.

Star Talk: Bhumika Loves Telugu Film than Hindi

Making the hay while sun shines is best fit to anyone. Bhoomika has been getting many offers in Telugu and Hindi but she says that she is comfortable with Telugu.

"The working style differs from North to South Indian films. But I try to adapt accordingly. I'm more comfortable with Telugu movies. Although I acted in many mass appealing films, Neelakanta's Missamma brought big recognition for me and I wish Indraganti's Mayabazar also works well. Both Neelakanta and Indraganti are geniuses", says Bhumika.

Let us wish that Bhumika's dreams come to reality with the success of 'Mayabazar'.
